Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 10, 2026

1. Introduction

Chesstrophy is a chess training web app that helps you study openings, practice courses, use drills and explorer features, and personalize your training.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect:

  • Account information from the sign-in method you choose: Google sign-in (your name, email address, Google account identifier, and profile picture), or email and password registration (your email address and a securely hashed password).
  • Your Chess.com or Lichess username, if you choose to connect one.
  • Public game information associated with your username, if you choose to import games during onboarding.
  • Your training progress, saved preferences, subscription status, and information you provide when contacting support.
  • Usage and device information collected through analytics and advertising measurement tools, where enabled.

3. How We Use Information

We use your information to:

  • Sign you in and manage your account.
  • Provide Chesstrophy’s training, course, drill, and explorer features.
  • Personalize your training based on your optional game imports and activity.
  • Process subscriptions and manage billing.
  • Protect the service, prevent misuse, and provide support.
  • Understand how Chesstrophy is used and improve it.

4. Legal Bases

Where privacy laws require a legal basis, we rely on:

  • Account, authentication, and service delivery: performance of a contract with you or steps you ask us to take before entering one.
  • Security, support, and service improvement: our legitimate interests in operating and improving Chesstrophy.
  • Optional public game imports: your consent or the steps you ask us to take when you choose to connect a Chess.com or Lichess username.
  • Analytics, advertising measurement, and cookies where required: your consent.
  • Billing and required records: legal obligations and, where applicable, performance of a contract.

5. Cookies, Preferences, Analytics, and Advertising Measurement

Chesstrophy may use cookies and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics and Umami, to understand product usage and improve the service.

We use required cookies and local storage for core service functions such as sign-in sessions, authentication security, billing or onboarding redirects, and saving your privacy preferences.

If analytics is enabled for your visit, Chesstrophy may also use short-lived first-party cookies to record limited product events in the background, such as sign-in, sign-up, or onboarding request events. These event cookies are intended to be temporary and are cleared after the browser sends the related analytics event.

Chesstrophy also uses the Reddit Pixel, an advertising measurement tool provided by Reddit, Inc. When it is enabled, it sets cookies and sends Reddit limited information about your visit — including page views and a small set of conversion events such as creating an account or starting a subscription, along with technical information such as your IP address, user agent, and the page you are on. Reddit uses this to measure and improve the performance of our ads and may match it to Reddit accounts and use it for ad targeting and audience building under its own privacy policy, available at https://www.reddit.com/policies/privacy-policy.

For the same two conversions — creating an account and starting a subscription — we also send Reddit a matching record from our own server, so a conversion is still measured when the browser tag is blocked. That server record contains the event, the amount of a subscription purchase, your IP address and browser user agent at sign-up, and an irreversible SHA-256 hash of your email address and account identifier — never your email address or account identifier in readable form. Each conversion carries a shared identifier so Reddit counts the browser and server copies as one event. We do not send Reddit your name or your training content.

The Reddit Pixel is optional and non-essential, and it has its own Advertising control, separate from the analytics one: you can keep product analytics on and still turn advertising measurement off. When advertising is turned off the pixel script is not loaded at all, and turning it off later removes the script and stops further events from being sent.

Optional analytics and advertising measurement are on by default and can be rejected at any time through the privacy preferences controls, either from the banner shown on your first visit or from the privacy section of your account. Where required, including for users in the EU and UK, we will request consent before enabling non-essential analytics or cookies. This Privacy Policy does not replace a cookie-consent mechanism.

6. Game Imports

You may optionally connect your own Chess.com or Lichess username during onboarding. If you do, Chesstrophy may import recent public games associated with your username to help personalize your training.

Game imports are a user choice. You do not have to connect a username or import games to use Chesstrophy, and you can skip this feature. The onboarding import request is intended to be completed only once per account.

You should only submit your own Chess.com or Lichess username. You can contact us to request deletion of imported game data associated with your account.

7. Payments

Payments and subscriptions are handled by Stripe. Chesstrophy does not receive or store your full payment card details. Stripe handles payment information under its own privacy policy.

8. No Sale of Personal Data

Chesstrophy does not sell your personal data.

9. When We Share Information

We may share information with trusted service providers that help us operate Chesstrophy, including:

  • Google, for sign-in.
  • Stripe, for payments and subscriptions.
  • Chess.com and Lichess, when you choose to connect your username or import public games.
  • Analytics providers.
  • Advertising and measurement partners, such as Reddit, where you have consented to advertising measurement.
  • Hosting and other service providers needed to operate and support Chesstrophy.

We may also share information if required by law, to protect our rights or users, or as part of a business transfer such as a merger or acquisition.

Service providers may process information only as needed to provide their services to Chesstrophy.

10. International Transfers

Your information may be processed by service providers located in countries other than your own. Where required, Chesstrophy uses appropriate safeguards for international data transfers.

11. How Long We Keep Information

We keep information only as long as needed to provide Chesstrophy, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and protect the service.

In practice:

  • Account information is kept while your account is active. When an account is closed — at your request, or by us under the Terms of Service — we deactivate it and replace the email address and username with anonymised values, and we delete your sessions, your password credentials, and any linked Google sign-in.
  • Training progress and imported game data are kept while they are useful to provide your training experience, unless you ask us to delete them.
  • Billing and subscription records may be kept as required for tax, accounting, fraud prevention, and legal compliance.
  • Analytics and advertising measurement information is kept according to the retention settings of the relevant analytics or advertising provider.

12. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access your personal information.
  • Correct inaccurate information.
  • Export your information.
  • Request deletion of your information.
  • Object to or request restriction of certain processing.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

To make a request, contact us using the contact channel below.

You may also choose not to import public games, skip the one-time onboarding game import, or withdraw analytics consent where a consent control is available.

13. Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your information. However, no online service can guarantee complete security.

14. Children

Chesstrophy is not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age required in your country to use the service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children who are not permitted to use Chesstrophy.

15. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and provide notice where required.
